I believe we do the best we can with what we know to do, however, current practices are NOT sustainable or effective as they could be. Health professionals are being stretched and challenged to do more with less…less support, less time, less resources, less autonomy, and less capacity.
IS THERE A BETTER WAY?
How can we as a healthcare system do better?
How can you as an individual healthcare professional do better?
As a medical professional, you are required to be clinically competent as you CARE for your patients. You are expected to do the best you can in your area of expertise. After all, you made a commitment, you have invested time, money, and made sacrifices, and took an OATH. You have studied, trained, and practiced…REPEAT…
Here are a few questions I ask you to consider…
Are you really doing the best that you are capable of doing? How do you know that it is your best? What if you don’t know what you don’t know OR your knowledge and practice in your expertise has become so automated that your sensitivity has been diminished? You are technically skillful, however, disengaged and detached from your patients and your own feelings.
The health and well-being of medical professionals is a quality measure that directly affects job performance, attendance, patient and practitioner safety, patient and practitioner satisfaction, and overall outcomes. Doctors, nurses, and therapists may be very skilled in their field of expertise, however, can become disengaged and detached, and lack the capacity for empathy and sensitivity. The cumulative effect of stress from care-giving can lead healthcare providers to burnout, compassion fatigue, illness, or injury. It takes energy, stamina, and an open heart to be truly attentive to the needs of others while staying present to your own values, limits, and capacity for caring.
Do you feel as enthusiastic as you did when you first started working in healthcare? Are you engaged and inspired as you practice? Do you feel fulfilled at the end of your day? What is most meaningful to you?
