Are you a Healthcare Professional feeling exhausted, disheartened, or on the verge of burnout? Have you knowingly put off your own health needs and now things are starting to take a toll? Are you questioning yourself, wondering what’s the point to all that you are doing? You’ve spent many precious years learning a skill, developing a practice, and building on a career in medicine, initially motivated by a desire to make a difference yet now starting to feel like you are losing yourself. Where did your enthusiasm go? What have you had to give up or sacrifice, only to feel like you are stuck and trapped in a system that slowly chips away at your heart and soul?
Like it or not, at some point during your life, you come face to face with yourself and your life choices. You can either keep on doing what you are doing or reflect on lessons learned through your experiences and begin to chart a new way forward. I have found that this reality check often comes after a sudden and unanticipated health crisis or a significant change or loss of some sort. There are simply two choices…to keep doing what you are doing or make a change.
As a medical professional, you are required to be both competent and empathetic in your practice. From what I have observed, and feedback received from patients and practitioners in healthcare, this is a real challenge to achieve. Providers are more detached and disengaged emotionally from their patients and their own feelings. Many physicians and nurses have learned to ignore and suppress their feelings, and over a period, the cumulative effect of stress and strain increases their risk of suffering from depression and burnout.
The National Academy of Medicine stated that more than half of US physicians are experiencing symptoms of burnout and nurses have a similar rate of burnout and depression.
It’s time for real change in the way we practice, in our model of care. Current practices are not sustainable or effective. Healthcare professionals are not machines. We are human beings who have made commitments and sacrifices to care for the health and well-being of others. Patients and families suffer at the hands of disengaged healthcare practitioners. There is a palpable silence that yearns to be heard…the unspeakable loss of life, livelihood, and loss of self. There is a better way!
What would it mean to you, the healthcare professional, to feel fulfilled and inspired each day doing what you know and love, making a bigger difference? How would more energy, passion, and a greater sense of purpose affect your practice, your level of fulfillment, your health and personal life? What effect would your changes and revitalized outlook have on patient care and satisfaction, health and financial outcomes, and overall safety?
